That doesn’t necessarily undermine the more interesting aspects, but as it closes the books, “Midnight Mass” triggers too much soul-searching about whether it was worth the time investment. The climax, however, is more puzzling than stirring, proving chaotic in ways that ultimately don’t make much sense. There’s also an interesting if somewhat underdeveloped subplot about the Muslim sheriff (Rahul Kohli) and how he and his son fit in as the church’s role becomes more inflamed.īuoyed by a cast that includes Henry Thomas and Annabeth Gish, what distinguishes “Midnight Mass” perhaps more than anything is the nature of its ideas and the extent to which Flanagan clearly wants to contemplate them while toying with horror conventions, seeking to engage the audience in unexpectedly layered fashion. When the explanations finally do come pouring out, they’re not wholly satisfying, though they provoke some serious conversations about interpreting the Bible and unexpected reactions within Paul’s flock. The first few episodes meander along without much sense of urgency (most of the episodes run more than an hour), sprinkling just enough clues to indicate that something wicked this way comes. Soon enough, strange and seemingly supernatural events begin to occur, spurring talk of miracles and religious fervor, though the origins of those acts – and Father Paul’s relationship to them – could be far more sinister. Riley reconnects with a high-school crush, Erin (Kate Siegel, reuniting with Flanagan, her husband, after the “Haunting” series), ruefully discussing how their lives didn’t go according to plan. Set on remote Crockett Island, the plot hinges on the return of Riley (“Friday Night Lights’” Zach Gilford), a young man trying to get his life back together after serving time for a fatal car accident and Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), a mysterious priest who arrives to replace the elderly clergyman who had long served the community. Students of the genre will see other derivative elements – the 1979 remake of “Nosferatu” comes to mind – in this macabre and cerebral tale, which plunges deeply into the relationship between religion and vampirism, what with the rising-from-the-dead, blood-drinking aspects of the latter. (For his part, the prolific author has already tweeted favorably about the show.) Good, because the scary buildup draws the audience in, and bad, because the finish is – as is frequently true of King-derived works – a significant letdown. Created by “The Haunting of Hill House’s” Mike Flanagan, the Netflix series deserves praise for its distinctive ambitions and jolting surprises but too often plays like a long-winded sermon, frittering around the edges of its homily.įlanagan wrote the screenplay for the 2019 Stephen King movie “Doctor Sleep,” which is appropriate, since this seven-episode project feels like a King miniseries, for good and ill. ![]() As is often the case with such fare, “Midnight Mass” begins as a creepy, provocative horror yarn and finally can’t deliver on its promise. ![]()

Among 344 clusters in southern China's Guangdong province and Sichuan in the southwest, 78 to 85 per cent occurred within families. ![]() The team concluded that in China, human-to-human transmission of the virus occurred largely within households. It gave an overview of the trip, assessed the response to the epidemic and identified next steps for China and other countries to take. The report was compiled by a team of more than two dozen specialists from China and overseas who were part of a nine-day WHO trip to Beijing, and Guangdong, Sichuan and Hubei provinces from February 16. Without identifying that animal chain, there was a risk that outbreaks could recur in areas where they had receded, the UN health agency warned. Bats appeared to be the reservoir of the virus, but the intermediate host had not yet been identified. It also said that epidemiologists were convinced that the coronavirus that caused the disease now known as Covid-19 was caused by an organism spread from animals. In a report, also released on Friday, the WHO said it was convinced that China's containment measures were effective as the number of new cases had continued to fall. More cases have also been reported in South Korea, Italy and Iran, prompting the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to raise its travel advisory for Italy and Iran, recommending travellers avoid all non-essential trips to those countries due to "limited access to adequate medical care in affected areas". Mainland China has 79,251 infections, with 39,002 patients recovered. So far, the epidemic has killed 2,835 people on the mainland, with 47 more fatalities on Saturday. ![]() The study was co-authored by dozens of medical experts, including Dr Zhong Nanshan, director of China's State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, and Chinese University of Hong Kong respiratory medicine expert Professor David Hui Shu-cheong. ![]() "Some patients with Covid-19 do not have fever or radiologic abnormalities on initial presentation, which has complicated the diagnosis," the study said, referring to the disease caused by the coronavirus. But 88.7 per cent of them did develop one after admission. They found that more than half the patients did not have a fever when they went into hospital, making diagnosis more difficult. In a joint study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from mainland China and Hong Kong reviewed the cases of 1,099 coronavirus patients from 552 hospitals in 30 provinces. The alerts came on Friday (Feb 28) as the WHO declared that the risk of global spread of the coronavirus epidemic had become "very high" - though the UN health agency stopped short of calling it a pandemic. The site Trump initially promised sounds much more like what’s being developed by the life sciences research company Verily, which is related to Google but is a distinct company. It does not include much information about how to find testing centers. The company announced on March 15 that it was “partnering with the US Government in developing a nationwide website that includes information about COVID-19 symptoms, risk, and testing information.” The new Google site includes plenty of information culled from sources like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Rather than creating a dynamic site that guides people to testing locations, what Google built is much simpler. Google does have a plan for responding to the coronavirus, but it’s not what the president said it was. The situation is much more complicated than that. Now that the Verily and Google sites are live, it’s more clear than ever that the website Trump described is not what the American public will use to find coronavirus testing. The belated launch came not long after Vanity Fair reported that President Trump was angry at Jared Kushner for overselling Google’s plans, before the president announced the new website at a White House press conference. It does not include the things Trump said the site would include, like information about local testing sites. ![]() The informational website includes “state-based information, safety and prevention tips, search trends related to COVID-19, and further resources for individuals, educators and businesses,” according to Google’s announcement. Google announced a week later that it would expand to two more testing sites in Northern California.Īfter being delayed by several days, Google finally launched its coronavirus portal on March 21. On top of that, the Verily site reached capacity the morning after launch. People with symptoms were told they weren’t eligible for the screening program, and those who were needed a Google login to use the tool. It wasn’t long before the Verily site ran into trouble. Trump said at a March 15 press conference that his earlier comments about Google had been “substantiated” and thanked “the head of Google, a great gentleman.” A few hours later, a site made by Google’s sister company Verily went live with a tool for coronavirus risk screening that directed residents of two counties in Northern California to test centers. Given the threat the novel coronavirus poses to the US, this is not a good sign.
